Homemade garlic bread is a quick and easy side that goes well with nearly any meal. With its crispy edges, the soft buttery interior, and the flavor of the garlicky herb topping, you’ll see smiles all around your dinner table.
I know pasta comes to mind when you think of garlic bread, but it can be enjoyed with much more, including hearty meatballs, crispy chicken cutlets, and juicy steak.
While it’s probably a bit obvious what ingredients go into garlic bread, I’d like to talk about some of them to ensure you achieve the best possible results.
What goes into garlic bread?
- Bread: Most grocery stores have a fresh-baked bread area and that’s where I go to get mine. I like crusty bread with a slightly soft squeeze. My grocery store had French bread sticks which were about a foot in length and I felt they did the best job.
- Garlic: You can’t make garlic bread without it! Two cloves are enough for a 12-inch loaf of bread. I mince the garlic as small as I possibly can to eliminate the possibility of undercooked garlic. Nothing is worse than undercooked garlic. Shiver.
- Butter: The nicest thing about making your own garlic bread is the fact that you can control the ingredients. The premade stuff at the store normally uses margarine. I use butter! Whichever your favorite butter is, use that. I used salted butter.
- Parsley: I know parsley is mostly just nice to look at but I do believe it gives a good herby flavor. I prefer fresh parsley but feel free to use dried parsley or to leave it out completely. It’s not the most important ingredient for sure! For dried parsley, use about 2 teaspoons.
I use a combination of baking and broiling for garlic bread.
The bake-only method isn’t perfect because while the bread does become hot and buttery, the tops stay pale looking and won’t develop the perfect crispy edges.
I find when you use the broil-only method, the garlic burns, and the tops of the bread become a little too crunchy. Just be sure to keep a close eye while the broiler is on because bread can burn in the blink of an eye. Trust me!

- 1/4 cup softened butter (1/2 stick)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves, loosely packed and minced
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Slice the bread loaf in half lengthwise.
- In a small bowl, add the softened butter, minced garlic, and minced parsley. Stir together to combine.
- Spread the butter mixture over both halves of the bread and then set them on a broiler-safe baking sheet.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- After baking for 10 minutes, switch the oven to broil (Mine was set to 525°F) and broil for about 3 minutes or until the top edges of the bread become toasty brown. Keep an eye on it while it broils so it doesn't burn!
